Meaning

The little fox crosses the icy river but wets its tail near the far bank. On the threshold of success, deliberate care completes the crossing.

The mirror of the previous hexagram: every line out of place, water below fire — and yet this disorder faces forward, holding all sixty-four situations in potential. The Book of Changes chooses to end here, before completion, because transition, not arrival, is the permanent human condition; the little fox's wet tail is the price of crossing carelessly at the very end.
