How the four pillars are built
BaZi begins from the traditional Chinese solar calendar. The year pillar changes at Li Chun (the “start of spring,” around February 4), the month pillar follows the twelve solar terms, the day pillar advances through the endless sixty-day ganzhi cycle, and the hour pillar is derived from your day’s stem and the two-hour period of your birth. Each pillar pairs one of ten heavenly stems with one of twelve earthly branches, and every character carries an element and a polarity.
The chart’s center of gravity is the day master — your day pillar’s stem. Everything else is read as terrain around it: elements that feed it, drain it, or discipline it. That is also why the same birth year produces such different people; the year animal everyone knows is only one character of eight. Your birth year, month, day, and hour each receive a pillar of two characters — one heavenly stem and one earthly branch — eight characters in all. - What is a day master?
- The heavenly stem of your day pillar is the day master (日主) — the character that represents you in the chart. There are ten day masters: yin and yang forms of Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water, each a distinct archetype. A Yang Fire person burns like the sun; a Yin Water person moves like morning mist. The rest of the chart is read in relation to this central character.
- Why does my birth hour matter in BaZi?
- The hour pillar completes the eight characters and colors the chart's later-life themes and inner world. The Chinese day divides into twelve two-hour periods, each with its own stem and branch. If you don't know your birth hour, the calculator still builds a six-character chart from year, month, and day — most of the reading, including your day master, remains intact.
