Hexagram 43 — Breakthrough (Guài)
- resolution
- exposure
- resolve
Lake (joy and openness) over Heaven (creative strength)
Meaning
One dark line remains atop five light ones: expose corruption openly and resolutely, but without violence or hatred.
Five strong lines rise against one dark line at the top — the last remnant of corruption, seemingly weak, actually poised over everything. The prescribed method is precise: public denunciation from one's own court first, resolution without rage, and no glee in the breaking.
Love & Relationships
Name the unspoken issue plainly; clean truth clears the air. The unspoken thing has ruled the relationship long enough; name it, calmly, completely, once. Truth-telling done with contempt fails — the goal is air, not injury.
Career & Work
Announce the wrongdoing through proper channels; do not fight dirty. Escalate the malpractice through channels, in writing, with allies briefed beforehand. And audit yourself first: the breakthrough hexagram punishes accusers who share the vice they expose.
Advice
Be resolute and public, never furtive; kindness toward persons, firmness toward wrongs. Hold this counsel lightly but seriously: the I Ching describes the shape of the moment, and Breakthrough rewards those who move with that shape rather than against it.
Changing Lines
Changing lines in Breakthrough gauge the resolve at each station — the toes' premature advance, the armed cry at nightfall met with preparedness rather than fear, the cheeks' visible strain, and the top line's warning of the last remnant left unfinished. A moving line shows where your resolution is strong, and where the old influence still hopes to survive.
