Hexagram 39Obstruction (Jiǎn)

  • impasse
  • reflection
  • allies

Water (depth and danger) over Mountain (keeping still)

Meaning

Water on the mountain: the path ahead is blocked. Turn inward, join forces with friends, and seek counsel rather than pressing on.

Water pooling on the mountain: the way forward is physically blocked, and the hexagram's genius is redirecting the blocked energy inward and sideways — into self-examination and alliance — rather than letting it smash against the wall. The obstruction is treated as information about direction, not a verdict on worth.

Love & Relationships

External pressures strain the bond; face them together, not apart. When outside pressure squeezes the relationship, the fatal error is turning the pressure on each other. Explicitly name the obstacle as the shared enemy and face it shoulder to shoulder.

Career & Work

Advance is blocked; regroup, reflect, and enlist capable allies. The direct route is closed; the workaround runs through people. Spend this blocked season recruiting the mentor, sponsor, or partner whose involvement changes the terrain.

Advice

When blocked, look within and turn toward help—not stubbornly forward. Hold this counsel lightly but seriously: the I Ching describes the shape of the moment, and Obstruction rewards those who move with that shape rather than against it.

Changing Lines

Changing lines in Obstruction repeat a single rhythm — going leads into blockage, coming back leads to fortune, allies, and union. A moving line tells you which of your current advances should be reversed into a strategic return, and where the friends who end the impasse will be found.
