Hexagram 29 — The Abysmal (Kǎn)
- danger
- depth
- sincerity
Water (depth and danger) over Water (depth and danger)
Meaning
Danger repeats like water in a ravine. Flow like water—filling each hollow, holding to sincerity—and you pass through unharmed.
Water does not escape the ravine by climbing; it escapes by filling every hollow until it flows over the edge. In repeated danger, thoroughness is the only exit — each difficulty completely met, none skipped, until the terrain releases you.
Love & Relationships
Emotional depths test you both; consistent sincerity is the raft. In a hard season, predictability is romance: be where you said, do what you promised. Depth of feeling shown consistently outweighs intensity shown occasionally.
Career & Work
Navigate repeated hazards step by step; keep integrity, avoid shortcuts. Navigate the crisis one verified step at a time and narrate honestly upward — in danger, your credibility is the only asset that appreciates. The shortcut out of the ravine is how people fall in deeper.
Advice
Do not fight the abyss—move through it steadily as water does. Hold this counsel lightly but seriously: the I Ching describes the shape of the moment, and The Abysmal rewards those who move with that shape rather than against it.
Changing Lines
In The Abysmal, changing lines locate you within the repeating danger — the small hollow at the abyss's edge, water that fills but does not overflow, the bound man lost among thorns for three years. A moving line tells you which hollow you are in now and whether it is filling toward release.
